Description
KRON-TV news footage from January 27 1966 with reporter Art Brown featuring scenes from a press conference with civil rights activist and organizer Stokely Carmichael, sponsored by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Carmichael explains the work of the Lowndes County Freedom Organization (LCFO) in Alabama and their selection of the Black Panther Symbol as an emblem. In the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper article from January 28 1966 (p.19) "The South's Militant New Party", they cite Carmichael as stating the Black Panther was chosen as being in direct opposition to the white rooster of the ruling Democratic Party in Alabama. This Black Panther symbol was later adopted by the Black Panther Party in Oakland in October 1966, co-founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. Carmichael also talks about the need for violence and carrying guns as a form of self defense, stating: "To advocate nonviolence in Lowndes County is to advocate suicide."
