Fay Stender on the need for Prison Reform in California

KPIX-TV news footage from March 11 1972 with reporter Belva Davis featuring an interview with lawyer Fay Stender, who is advocating for prison reform in California. Stender argues that the current system of mass incarceration represents: "Cruel and unusual punishment" and states: "We hope to end lock up as a penological tool of infinite duration in California." Stender also goes on to challenge how prisoners are stereotyped by the system, pointing out that: "You might label someone a category but you lock up an individual."
