Description
Episode from KRON-TV's Decades series made in 1997 which uses original news footage and contemporary interviews to reflect on Bay Area history from the 1930s including issues relating to: the Great Depression and employment; recreation and leisure pastimes; sports; the "small town" character of San Francisco; the social extravagance of high society; nightlife (including Sally Rand); institutional corruption; the port of San Francisco; the General Strike of 1934; popular radio culture; the Coit Tower murals; construction of Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge; the Golden Gate International Exposition; the China Clipper flying boat air service and the advent of World War II. Also features interviews with: Herb Caen; Ernie Heckscher; Jerry Flamm; Carol Channing; Frenchie Gales; Millie Robbins; Edmund G. Brown Sr.; Scott Newhall; Germaine Bulkie and Bill Bailey. This program was produced by Pamela Rorke-Levy and edited by Susan Burgess-Lent. This Emmy Award winning series traced the rich history of San Francisco from the Gold Rush to the 21st Century.
