Description
KPIX-TV news footage from January 30, 1970 with reporter Jay Newburn featuring scenes from the law offices of Melvin Belli (1907-1996) on Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Belli announces the filing of an $11 million damage suit in Federal Court on behalf of the American promoters of The Rolling Stones against Filmways Inc., via transatlantic telephone cable from Johannesburg, South Africa. Filmways Inc owned the Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma County which was originally selected to host the Stones's free rock festival in December 1969, before the venue was changed at the last minute to the Altamont Speedway in Alameda County. Includes views of Belli's offices and a press conference with Belli's law partner Vasilios B. Choulos (1927-2003), who claims: "What happened at Altamont is a direct result of Filmways and their actions" and goes on to explain why. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
