Description
KPIX-TV news footage from August 30, 1971 with reporter Mike Lee featuring scenes from an interview with a Mr Brown, who talks about how prison guards in California feel about their current situation, in the aftermath of recent killings of guards and inmates at San Quentin prison. Lee opens by asking: "Mr. Brown, some officers seem to think that they are at war. That this is actually a war being carried out. Is this in your opinion a widespread feeling among guards?" Mr. Brown agrees and calls 7% of California's prison inmate population "warehouse cases", claiming that they cannot be rehabilitated. He also talks about improvements that need to be made in San Quentin prison and points out that 13 guards have already quit there in the past week alone. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
