Description
KPIX-TV news footage from June 22, 1974 featuring brief scenes from a nurses rally and bake sale in Oakland. Over 4000 registered nurses had been on strike in the Bay Area since June 7 and negotiations over staffing in acute care centers had broken down again that weekend. Note that we have no paperwork for this clip but the original KPIX newsfilm shot-log titled this story: "Nurses hold rally and bake sale in Oakland (Fong-Cecil Williams)." The Rev. Cecil Williams can be seen onstage at this rally and it seems probable that "Fong" is the woman seen making a speech, in which she declares: "This in not a strike against the public. This is not a strike for higher wages. This is not a strike against patients. This is a strike for patients who need and deserve the best possible medical care that our society can give them!" Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
