Description
KRON-TV news report from May 5th 1967 with Don Picken in Berkeley featuring a visit to "Jamila's School For Belly Dancing" at the Telegraph Avenue apartment of Jamila Salimpour (1926-2017), who we are told has been teaching belly dancing classes there for 7 years. Includes views of students (and graduates) dancing and interviews with students: Caroline Brown; Audrey Borland; Christine Walsh; Marsha Fisher and Penny Coats. Picken also interviews Salimpour and asks: "What kind of person can become a belly dancer?" She replies: "I think any kind of person. A person who loves dance and who likes people and as a female, likes herself." It should be noted that the Salimpour School still teaches dance classes in El Cerrito.
