Description
Fragment of KRON News footage shot on either February 21st or 22nd in San Francisco featuring a brief interview with Eldridge Cleaver (1935-98) in the street who had interviewed Betty Shabazz (Malcolm X's widow) at Ramparts Magazine on February 21st. Shabazz was escorted to and from Ramparts that day by armed members of the Black Panther Party and there was a tense confrontation with police as they left Ramparts. The reporter asks Cleaver: "Why were the men who were with Malcolm X's widow armed?" Cleaver replies "For her protection." The reporter follows up by speculating: "Did you think her life was in danger?" and Cleaver says: "We don't feel that her life was in danger any more than any other black person's life is in danger in America." The reporter continues "Do you think that most black people's lives are in danger?" and Cleaver confirms that: "The record shows that many black people have been murdered outright here in America. And we see nothing to believe that this is going to stop." This 16mm newsfilm was recorded in the original shot-logs as being used in the newscast for February 22nd but may have been shot on February 21st. All the other KRON newsfilm shot on February 21st relating to the Ramparts incident is currently missing.
