Description
KPIX Eyewitness News project from August 21st 1968 in San Francisco by Mike Lee featuring problems with the recently inaugurated Martin Luther King Memorial outdoor swimming pool in Bayview Hunters Point. Sand is accumulating in the pool because a valve in the filtration system is broken. Includes views of Isaiah Nelson teaching local youth to swim (holding their breath underwater) and of sand being dredged from the pool. Also an interview with Jesse Fugaria who explains that the pool was opened by Mayor Alioto too soon before the filter system could be fully tested by installation engineers.
