Community members speak out against Panthers' tactics

KPIX Eyewitness news report from September 24th 1971 featuring footage of a boycott of Bill's Liquor an African-American-owned liquor store on Grove Street in Oakland over the owner's refusal to make a weekly donation of money to the Black Panther Party's community initiatives or "Survival Programs." Features scenes from a press conference given by an ad hoc committee comprised of various business social and civic organizations of the African-American community. The committee was formed in response to what amounted to "forceful methods of donation" to the Black Panther Party's Survival Programs. Two committee members make statements to the press stating that they support the motivations behind many of the Panthers' Survival Programs but they do not support the Panthers' attitude toward black-owned businesses. Another member of the ad hoc committee states that "Mr. Newton does not under any circumstances speak for us as the absolute leader of the black community."
