Description
KPIX Eyewitness News report from October 31st 1969 at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco featuring a press conference by a citizens coalition who want to prevent Alcatraz Island from being developed as a commercial tourist attraction. A spokesman refers to Alcatraz as the "gem" of the Bay Area and explains that they are asking San Francisco's Supervisors to urge Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel to declare the island as a national monument or park. It should be noted that less than 3 weeks later Native Americans began an occupation of Alcatraz Island which lasted until June 1971.
