Description
KRON-TV news footage from probably May 14, 1969 featuring scenes of Joan Baez and David Harris speaking at a large rally for non-violence on San Francisco State College's campus. Baez sings on the Speakers Platform with another man playing guitar and then talks to the crowd about decency, the need to speak up and act on convictions, and non-payment of income taxes. She also sympathizes that in her opinion right now in the US: "Anything aside from violence is really almost totally misunderstood." Harris is shown briefly describing his goal: "What I'm gonna try and do today is try and make some sense of America. To try and ... present ... some way that we can all understand that overwhelming phenomenon that we all live in the middle of." He also refers to the "basic problem" of having to live on a day-to-day basis. An article on p.13 of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper dated May 15, 1969 states this rally took place on campus at 12 noon and lasted for 2 hours. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
