Description
KRON-TV news footage from June 7th 1966 with reporter Ed Hart featuring an interview with middleweight boxer Jimmy Lester (1944-2006), aka the Bayview Blaster. Lester reviews his recent victory over Hurricane Kid at the Oakland Auditorium on May 31st and is also asked to look forward to the upcoming middleweight title fight between Emile Griffith and Joey Archer on July 13th at Madison Square Garden. Hart closes the interview by saying: "Well Jimmy, good luck to you and we know if anyone's a champion, you are ... You'll have that championship" and Lester replies: "Well I hope so Ed, if you only gimme the chance!" Ends with views of Lester sparring in the ring. From the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco, Lester was twice ranked during his boxing career at number two. It should be noted that Lester's father Vern Lester was a boxer who fought under his own name in the 1940s and also as Jimmy "Top Row" Allen, who lost a split decision to middleweight champion Jake LaMotta in 1948.
