Description
KPIX-TV news footage from January 30, 1970 with reporter Ben Williams featuring scenes from an interview with sociologist and civil rights activist Harry Edwards, who has been named to a sociology teaching post at UC Berkeley, by Chancellor Roger Heyns. Edwards has just completed a doctorate in sociology at Cornell University and will start teaching at UC Berkeley as an Assistant Professor of Sociology in July, despite vocal oppostion from former UC Regent Max Rafferty and others. Edwards states how this appointment: "Validates some of my own beliefs about a great university, one of which is that the university should pick faculty members not based upon their political ideology or their political activity but based on their scholastic and academic credentials."
