Description
KPIX-TV news footage from July 12 1971 with reporter Mike Lee featuring views of the Deuel Vocational Institute in San Joaquin County near Tracy, CA which recently experienced a "riot" involving 200 inmates. Prisoner Thomas O'Neill was fatally stabbed during this disturbance but not as a part of the riot itself. Note that Deuel was "deactivated" as a California correctional facility on September 30, 2021. Also includes a brief interview with Associate Superintendent Hacker, who states: "The stabbing, as far as we know at this point, was not related to the disturbance... The disturbance ... occured in a different housing wing and the stabbing, which may be racially motivated, was between black and white inmates." Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
