Description
KRON -TV news footage from February 14, 1969 featuring scenes from Oakland where the parents of Douglas Patterson (1942-2019) and Kay Reasbeck listen to their children being married live in Tokyo, Japan, via a transcontinental telephone speaker line. Groom Doug Patterson was stationed in Vietnam with the Air Force and couldn't get enough time off to return home, so fiancee Kay Reasbeck flew over to marry him in Tokyo. The bride and groom were graduates of UC Berkeley. Not all the negative elements survived from this film shoot and they were heavily edited. We've tried to produce a screener cut which makes chronological sense of the ceremony itself. Note that the bride's mother worked for AT&T - who provided the speakers which enabled this call, as a publicity plug. Thanks to Rebecca Patterson for providing background information on this newsfilm. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
