Coretta Scott King rehearses 'A Lincoln Portrait' with San Francisco Symphony

KPIX-TV news footage from April 29th 1970 with reporter Belva Davis featuring scenes of Coretta Scott King (1927-2006) rehearsing 'A Lincoln Portrait' with Josef Krips and the San Francisco Symphony at the opera house. Davis tells us that Scott King has already narrated Aaron Copland's 1942 work twice now (for the Washington DC Symphony) and it is worth noting that Scott King received a BA in music and education from Antioch College in Ohio and then a degree in voice and violin from the New England Conservatory of Music. Davis interviews Scott King, who goes on to explain that with this kind of performance she hopes to engage with people who wouldn't normally consider becoming involved in the struggle for the civil rights movement. There are views of Scott King rehearsing speeches made by President Abraham Lincoln used in Copland's musical portrait of Lincoln, including his State of the Union address on December 1st 1862 and a passage from Lincoln's Collected Works.
