Description
KPIX news footage from May 10th 1978 with Bill Hillman featuring views of the Niantic sailing ship's hull. Originally built in Connecticut in 1832, the Niantic transported prospectors to San Francisco during the 1849 gold rush, was deserted by most of her crew and run aground near the intersections of Clay and Montgomery Street after July 12th 1849 (the last entry in the ship's log). The Niantic was then converted for various uses as a warehouse, offices and hotel. Note that the Niantic's hull was rediscovered several times over the decades whilst it lay landlocked, including the years 1872 and 1907. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
