Description
KTVU news footage from April 28, 1969 with reporter Claud Mann featuring scenes from a press conference by the Black Panther Party, with Founding Chairman and National Organizer of the Black Panther Party Bobby Seale and Communications Secretary Kathleen Cleaver speaking to the press. With Newton's bail hearing now set for May 1 by Judge Alphonso Zirpoli, Mann explains that Newton's supporters plan to rally on the steps of the Federal Office Building. Cleaver refers to the formation of a "revolutionary coalition" to help push for Newton's release on bail. Seale demands that the bail on Newton be "zero dollars" and emphasizes: "People have paid for all of Huey's freedom in blood, suffering, torture and death. Bobby Hutton was the first to die for Huey P. Newton's freedom." Seale also explains that a recent "purge" of the Black Panther Party was prompted by the need to remove unwanted elements, which he describes as: "Provocatuer agents trying to provoke crap." Mann ends this report by reminding us that Newton has now served 17 months of a 15 year sentence. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
