Strategic Priorities and Goals

Ensure that every aspect of the Library’s work — including our decisions, services, spaces, acquisitions and relationships — centers student success as our primary purpose and embodies diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility as our guiding principles.  

• Goal 1.1: Build shared capacity across the Library to assess and improve our work through a student success and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) lens.  

• Goal 1.2: Conduct a Library-wide DEIA and student success audit of current practices throughout the Library to better inform our future work practices.  

• Goal 1.3: Prioritize audit findings based on impact, feasibility, and alignment with student success.  

• Goal 1.4: Produce clear, actionable recommendations to improve the Library’s alignment with student success and DEIA. 

• Goal 1.5: Establish an ongoing cycle for reassessment and accountability.  

Provide welcoming, safe, and inclusive Library experiences that support learning, collaboration, community, and belonging.   

• Goal 2.1: Build shared capacity to provide welcoming and supportive Library experiences for students with diverse needs.  

• Goal 2.2: Activate physical and virtual Library spaces to feel welcoming, creative and student-centered through displays, exhibits and visible student work. 

• Goal 2.3: Improve the physical environment to create warmer, more inviting first impressions and everyday experiences that support independent and confident use by all Library users. 

• Goal 2.4: Expand programming and events that foster community, connection and a sense of belonging in the Library. 

• Goal 2.5: Design and refine Library online and physical spaces based on how students actually use them and what they say they need. 

Remove barriers to information by advancing open access initiatives and connecting users with our resources, tools and expertise. 

• Goal 3.1: Reduce library-level economic and structural barriers that limit students’ ability to use Library resources and services.  

• Goal 3.2: Ensure access to Library services and resources is informed by evidence and user needs so high-need services and resources can be prioritized and low-need services reduced. 

• Goal 3.3: Strengthen support for and understanding of open access and open educational resources (OER) across campus to increase adoption of open materials and improve affordability for students and faculty.  

Regularly assess and improve our collections, services and spaces, both physical and virtual, by centering the experiences, feedback and well-being of Library users.  

• Goal 4.1: Establish a culture of assessment and improvement within the Library.  

• Goal 4.2: Create workflows to collect and use data intentionally to inform internal decisions, reduce duplication of efforts, and facilitate improvements across the Library.  

• Goal 4.3: Establish consistent, visible, and low-barrier ways for users to provide feedback on Library collections, spaces, and services.   

• Goal 4.4: Integrate user research and cycles of assessment and improvement into everyday practices across the Library as a shared responsibility. 

• Goal 4.5: Improve transparency and communication about data and user feedback so Library employees can act more effectively on evidence.    

Build trust and strengthen collaboration across the Library and with the broader SFSU community through open communication that makes our goals, decisions and impact clear to all.  

• Goal 5.1: Establish a sustainable communication infrastructure to clearly and consistently articulate the Library’s value and impact. 

• Goal 5.2: Improve awareness and discoverability of existing Library resources, services and access options by using multiple communication channels strategically to reach different audiences where they are.   

• Goal 5.3: Reduce silos, build trust, and establish shared decision-making across Library units.  

• Goal 5.4: Build and sustain collaborative relationships with campus and community partners to extend and amplify the Library’s reach and impact.   

• Goal 5.5: Share stories that demonstrate the Library’s value and impact on people’s lives. 

Honor and amplify the histories and voices that reflect SFSU’s long-standing commitments to equity, activism and social justice, strengthening campus connections and inspiring inquiry. 

• Goal 6.1: Integrate SFSU’s history of activism, equity and social justice into accessible student experiences. 

• Goal 6.2: Represent and amplify SFSU’s stories, highlighting student voices and identities. 

• Goal 6.3: Equip all Library employees and campus partners to serve as storytellers of SFSU and Library history.  

• Goal 6.4: Connect historical collections with current movements, voices and social justice work.
