Overview

13th to 19th Century Yemenite Hebrew Scrolls & Manuscripts: Scrolls with talismans to ward off the evil eye or to promote fertility / Medieval books / Pentateuch and Esther scrolls. Adolph Sutro, San Francisco mayor from 1895-1897, purchased the collection (150 works) in Jerusalem in 1884 from the estate of Moses Shapira, a famous antiquities dealer. Shapira--who tried to sell a "lost book of the Bible" to the British Museum--is the subject of a new work by SFSU professor Chanan Tigay, The Lost Book of Moses.
