Overview

Women have always been part of the Lowriders community. Recently, a new generation of women collectors, scholars, and enthusiasts are redefining what it means to be a Latina leading the path in a male-dominated scene.

Join us for a conversation with lowrider collectors Valerie Tulier-Laiwa and Ruby Ramirez, moderated by Prof. Lucia Araiza Uribe (Latina/Latino Studies).

This is event is open to the public — all are welcome! Light refreshments will be provided.

👉 Make sure to check out Ruby Ramirez’s custom-built 1950 Chevy Fleetline Deluxe that will be parked outside the Library starting at noon!

Our Bay Area Television Archive preserves this special report about lowrider car culture in San Francisco’s Mission District from July 26, 1980. The segment was produced by Richard Saiz for KPIX-TV’s “All Together Now” series.

It includes scenes of 21-year old Valerie Tulier-Laiwa lowriding on Mission Street with San Francisco’s first all-women lowrider club and explaining why she loves it so much.
