Stokely Carmichael on White "Backlash" and Black Power

KPIX-TV news footage from 1966 with reporter Nancy Clark featuring scenes from a press conference with civil rights activist and organizer Stokely Carmichael, who in response to a question about white "backlash" states: " I don't think there's any such thing as a backlash. I think that's a rationalization for white America of the racist nature of America." He goes onto reflect on California's voting to approve Proposition 14 in 1964 (overturned by the Supreme Court in 1966) and argues: "That was white people reinforcing their institutions and way of life." Ends with views of Carmichael delivering a speech, in which he defines one aspect of "Black Power" as: "The necessity to reclaim our history and our identity from the cultural terrorism and depradation of self justifying white guilt."
