Description
KQED news footage from October 29 1966 featuring scenes from the South San Francisco Opera House on 3rd Street in San Francisco, where Stokely Carmichael is scheduled to give a speech about Black Power, in the wake of the recent Bayview Hunters Point social uprising. The reporter explains that local press were not granted access to this meeting. Includes a press conference outside by Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally (1926-2012), who states: "I see nothing negative about Black Power ... I see it as a very positive force to unite and organize negroes" and goes onto express his support for Governor Pat Brown in his Gubernatorial contest with Ronald Reagan. Ends with views of people leaving the Opera House after Carmichael's speech is over, as the reporter tells us Carmichael will now be heading over to the East Bay, to give a speech as part of the Black Power conference at UC Berkeley's Greek Theater. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
