Description
KRON-TV news footage from November 25, 1970 with reporter Phil Wilson featuring scenes from Santa Rosa Municipal Court, where Mohawk Native American activist Richard Oakes is being arraigned after allegedly used a rifle to collect a $1 toll on a country road in Sonoma County, which runs through the Pomo Tribe's Stewart's Point rancheria land. Includes interviews with attorney Aubrey Grossman, who protests against the charge of begging (they were expecting a charge of blocking a public road) and with Oakes, who comments wryly that: "The charge is pretty ludicrous." District Attorney John Hawkes latter admitted there had been a clerical error and confirmed the charge would be amended to blocking a public road. Judge James E. Jones, Jr. continued the case until January 4, 1971. Also includes views of the Waller Ranch near Santa Rosa, which was occupied briefly last night by United Indians of All Tribes, including Native Americans from Alcatraz and members of the Pomo tribe. There is also a brief interview with the caretaker of this government reservation property, Mr Gondola. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
