Marin City Residents Meet Marin County Supervisors (KPIX-TV)

KPIX-TV news footage from April 5th 1966 with reporter Rollin Post at Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, where Supervisors are listening to Marin City residents describe their living conditions and social grievances. This meeting was held in response to prolonged social unrest in Marin City, caused by issues of racism, high unemployment (54% according to a Congress of Racial Equality survey) and the community's belief they are being ignored. When speaking to a "Mr Leydecker" (probably Supervisor Byron Waite Leydecker), a Mrs. Scott states: "I'm here to say this to you. That if the white man had to live as the negro lives, they would be running over each other jumping off Golden Gate Bridge!" Another resident points out that: "We fight and die for America, in a country where we aren't even free." This meeting at the Civic Center was called in the aftermath of what Post refers to as: "The worst disturbance yet in Marin City ... that frustrated community.
