Description
KTVU News footage from the mid 1960s with reporter Carlton Cordell featuring silent views of Willie Mays hitting a "home run record" for the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. Includes scenes of Cordell interviewing Mays in the locker room and also speaking with the youth who managed to get the ball. The only paperwork with the 16mm film reads: "Willie ... home run record." The scoreboard indicates the Giants were playing the St. Louis Cardinals and Mays says he's 35 years old. The Baseball Almanac points out that on 8/17/66 the Giants played the Cards in SF. "Willie Mays moved up to #2 (behind Babe Ruth) on the all-time list with his five-hundred thirty-fifth career home run off of Ray Washburn as the San Francisco Giants topped the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on August 17th." It seems probable this is footage of that sporting landmark. Thanks to Andy Joe for this information. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
