Description
KRON-TV news footage from September 7, 1965 featuring scenes from a press conference by the Synanon organization, in which director Jack Hurst and attorney Dan L. Garrett, Jr. protest against recent attacks against Synanon. Hurst claims that: "There is a ... segment of our society - the lunatic fringe, the bigots - that have been devoting their time and energy to running us out of he Bay Area." He describes how an effigy of a hanged man sporting the words "Hopheads Go Home" was placed on the gates of their Tamales Bay Center, how buildings there had been broken into and that a brick was thrown through the windshield of a truck parked at their Lombard Street headquarters, in San Francisco. Garrett Jr. states that Synanon has increased security measures following these incidents and that residents have been instructed in the procedures for citizens arrest, if they encounters "lunatics" on Synanon property.
