Research Commons and Study Commons Computers
Overview
The Library’s Research Commons (1st Floor) and Study Commons (Ground Floor) have more computer workstations than any other facility on campus. There are over 200 computers available, both Windows PCs and Macs. Both areas offer scanners and printing, including color and wifi printing. The Research Commons is open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week when classes are in session during Fall and Spring semesters and both areas may offer extended hours at other times. Be sure to check the Library hours before visiting the Library.
All SF State students, staff, and faculty with a valid OneCard/SF State ID are welcome to use the Library computer services. A few computers in the Research Commons can also be used by guest users.

Computer Sign-On
To use the computers, sit down at an available computer and sign-on with your SF State or Guest ID number. Computer use is limited to three, ten minute sessions per day on the Express computers, 120 minutes per day on Guest stations, unlimited for SF State users on the Research and Study Commons computers, and limited to 180 minutes and prioritized for film and audio editing in the Digital Media Studio.
Friends of the Library, Alumni Association and other affiliated users who have registered with Circulation Services at the Book Checkout & Pickup Counter are also recognized by the Sign-On system and can login using their special borrower ID number.
After Hours Access
When classes are in session during Fall and Spring semesters the Research Commons and Study Commons have extended hours. The Library is open to the public, as well as to students, faculty and staff at SF State everyday until midnight during the Fall and Spring semesters. Be sure to check the current hours before visiting.
After midnight you must have a valid SF State One Card ID to remain in or to enter the Research Commons.
Computers & Software
Windows PCs
Over 100 Windows computers with a wide range of software, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, SPSS, Mathematica and ArcGIS. Generally, these computers can be used for as many hours as you like. After the initial 2 hour session, you'll be asked if you’d like additional time. During busy periods time limits may be established for these computers.
Macintosh Computers
Over 50 iMacs with a wide range of software, including Firefox, MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Many of these Macs have scanners. Generally, these computers can be used for as many hours as you like. During busy periods time limits may be established. SF State students, faculty and staff only. Sign-on with university ID number.
Express Computers
Express Computers in both the Research Commons and Study Commons are set aside for quick print jobs, email and web browsing. Use is limited to 3, 10 minute sessions per day.
Guest Computers
Guest computers are available for use by members of the public in the Research Commons. Guest users must first register for a Guest Computer Sign-On account. Use limited to 2 hours per day. Sign-on with Guest ID number.
Printing
OneCard printing (including wi-fi and color printing) is available from all the computers in the Research and Study Commons. To add money to a OneCard, use a AVS machine in the Study Commons, Research Commons or Circulation Services.
Scanners
Scanners are connected to PCs and Macs in both the Research Commons and Study Commons. The Digital Media Studio, 2nd floor, also has scanners available.
