Thorax Figure, a sculpture by Stephen De Staebler, the late emeritus faculty member from SF State’s Art Department, and renowned sculptor, has been installed in the 1st floor corridor of the Library near the Events Room. The original sculpture was composed of pigmented stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware with surface oxides, fire brick and stone, and is owned by the de Young Museum. The sculpture in the Library is one of three bronze sculptures cast from the original.
Stephen de Staebler taught sculpture at SF State for thirty years, from 1961 to 1991, and his work was the subject of a retrospective at the de Young Museum in spring 2012. The Library will be adding the monograph Matter + Spirit which was published in conjunction with the de Young exhibition to its collection.
