J. Paul Leonard Library Building begins phased reopening

January 17th, 2012

The Library will reopen in the new building in stages during the spring semester. Check here for service location updates as we move forward.

Later in the spring semester, all areas of the Library and Academic Technology will open to the University community.

Once fully open, the Library will include over 3000 seats for study, group study rooms and areas, over 250 public computers, a Digital Media Studio for students with 9 editing rooms and extended hours study areas with 18 group study rooms.

I went through my entire college experience, both AA, BA, and MA without a library because of this project, thanks

All dates are subject to change, but we hope that all floors of the Library will be open by the end of March.

Will it be open 24 hours like the annex was? Or?

  • 7. Thoreau  |  February 7th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

When will the de Bellis collection reopen, and where will it be located. Do you know the name and email address of the curator?

No automated toilets, faucets, or paper towel dispensers.

are printing services still in the Annex? When will it move to the Library?

Why does it take 4 hours to retrieve a book in the same building? Is there a plan to speed this feature up?

  • 12. Jeff  |  February 14th, 2012 at 10:28 pm

Am I able to browse books in a section? Sometimes I just want to look at books in a general topic to widen my awareness of what types of books are written on a given subject,

I am so excited about putting my hands on physical books.

  • 13. Thoreau  |  February 20th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

You bet. The newest and most heavily used books will be browsable on open shelves on floors 3 and 4.

  • 14. Thoreau  |  February 20th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Once the Library is fully open retrieval time should be closer to 15 minutes.

  • 15. Thoreau  |  February 20th, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Printing is still in Annex 1 as well as in HSS 107 and 127. We expect these services to relocate to the new Library right after Spring Break.

The best contact for inquiries related to the de Bellis Collection at this time is LaVonne Jacobson (lavonne@sfsu.edu).

  • 18. Angela  |  February 21st, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Will there be any job openings for the new cafes?

  • 19. Evelyn  |  February 29th, 2012 at 11:26 am

One comment states there are certain areas in the library which will remain 24hrs during regular semester; yet, the information sheets state the commons will close at 2am with no other information pertaining to the location of the 24hr access. Plz advise.

Don’t worry, there will be a 24 hour space in the new Library during the regular semesters.

  • 22. Thoreau  |  March 5th, 2012 at 10:32 pm

Not sure. The cafe will not be operated by the Library.

  • 23. Thoreau  |  March 5th, 2012 at 10:57 pm

Once the Library is fully open the Annexes will stay open, but how they will be used is still being decided.

  • 24. Alex  |  March 8th, 2012 at 12:40 am

It would be great if we could make this library only for SFSU students only, I hate when CCSF kids take over the annex

  • 25. Ricky  |  March 12th, 2012 at 10:12 pm

Full library will be open on March 26th

  • 26. Thoreau  |  March 16th, 2012 at 1:22 am

Campus security officers will check IDs at midnight and only let current SF State patrons stay in the Library after that time.
