The 2014 Annual Longmore Lecture in Disability Studies: Alison Kafer
“Crip Relations: Critical Disability Studies Now”

If disability is largely experienced in relation – to other people, to buildings, and other structures, to histories and practices – how might we understand the many complex relations with feminist, queer, or critical race and ethnic studies?

Alison Kafer is Associate Professor and Chair of the Feminist Studies program at Southwestern University, where she also teaches courses in the Environmental Studies and Race and Ethnic Studies programs. She is the author of Feminist, Queer, Crip (Indiana UP, 2013) and is currently co-editing (with Michelle Jarman) a special issue of Disability Studies Quarterly on growing disability studies.

Amazingly, the only manuscript source for this work is housed at SFSU. This performance will be presented by alumni of the CSU in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the deBellis Collection. Written for 6 soloists and strings, the performance will include English supertitles.

Music and a reception to launch the de Bellis collection exhibit “Music of the Italian Masters: Sight, Sound, Emotion.” The concert will feature students and piano Professor Victoria Neve performing works from the Collection. SF State’s ensemble group Ut, Re, Mi will perform 16th-century Magnificats by Giovanni Animuccia and a cycle of six songs by Fernando Paer written in 1804. Neve will also play a piece by Clementi on the Clementi Piano Forte.
