The Big Book Move was a significant milestone for the Library building project. Now that it is completed, the contractor can begin the last phase of the project: gutting and renovating the old building.
During Summer 2010, the project staff successfully transferred the entire collection of books, government publications, microforms and audio recordings from the existing Library building into the new west addition. Working 16 hours a day, 6 days a week, a crew of 70 student assistants, 80 Library faculty and staff, professional movers and project managers transported about 1 million items. Significant portions of the Library collections remain in storage or at the Sonoma State University Library. As staffing and space permits, these items will be brought back to campus and re-integrated into the on-campus collections.
The majority of the collections are now housed in the automated Library Retrieval System, which fills the ground, first and second floors of the west addition. The third and fourth floors of the west addition are filled with shelving; about 20% of the book collection will available on those floors for browsing when the building re-opens in the spring of 2012.
