It will be a hassle, although there are plenty of libraries nearby, like the one across from Stonestown, a short hop on the metro to the West Portal library and main, and even CCSF's library.

From what I've heard about study spaces during this construction term, college buildings are making areas available for study. It should also be noted that there are some underutilized computer labs out there that can be the perfect place to handle your computing needs without the pressure of places like the MAC lab. So really, you don't have to use the annex if it is too inconvenient.

Still, I'm confused about the thesis binding services. Where is that going to be? Rapid Copy is shutting down, but how am I going to get my thesis done? (Pleeeese, don't send it to the annex near the garage, turning in your thesis at admin and going all the way to the other extreme of campus is nuts!)

Like most university improvements, the students who pay for the improvements (current students) rarely are the students (future students) who get to actually enjoy the improvements. One would like to think this is a continuous process where every incoming class would benefit from the previous classes finacial support for the university. However in the case of the current student and new incoming students at SFSU this isnt the case, not only are we not benefitting from any finacial support from previous classes (dilapidated buildings, fee increases, and run down facilities like the library) now we are being asked to sacrifice the intellectual hub of any students life, the library.

P.S. Having read all of the previous blog posts, watch out for those post's which are possibly made by people who work (offically or unoffically) for the university and are trying to counter any negative feelings regarding the building of the new library. Despite what they say, building the new library putting a huge burden, finacially and academically, on current and new students.

I understand that the plans to fix the library at SFSU are important for the future success of the university and its students, but I do not appreciate going for my M.A. at a university that will not have an official library. For me, being surrounded by books is a major inspiration to continue my studies. Although I'm excited to attend SFSU, I am not nearly as excited to attend as I was when I thought that the campus would AT LEAST have a library! I am extremely dissapointed in this revelation (which I BARELY found out about at the Graduate Orientation!!!!). I can only hope that this major inconvinience will not affect my studies, my library research practice, and especially my experience as a graduate student!

Wow, I am totally freaked out by the reality that I am not going to be able to browse the stacks and pick which books I need. Like Rebecca's comments said , looking at a books' description online does not tell you enough about a book see if it is sufficient...and then to order it online and wait 24 hours for it! There has got to be a better way. Really, this is an extreme hardship.

Also as stated, this is a commuter college with many working adult students who use public transportation to get back and forth which means lugging around many, many heavy books around on trains, buses, bicycles etc... This experience is already backbreaking enough without having to take home a stack of books that maybe no good and then having to do it all over again 24 hours later while trying to fit in classes, research, papers, and work...not to mention the occasional dinner with friends and family. It is too much to ask of us and especially to drop this on us without warning while we are suffering the added stress of not being able to complete our degrees in a timely manner because of fewer and fewer classes.

University and library officials really need to rethink this setup even if it means providing temporary buildings in the middle of the greens to house the books.

I will attend my final semester at SFSU this fall and if the library experience is as horrifying as it sounds like it will be, then i will definitely be withdrawing my plans to attend graduate school there.

Good luck with the library project, we really do need a better building and specifically more quiet study spaces and quiet computer labs. My experience with going to the library 4 days a week has been very frustrating and often unproductive since many of the younger students (including the ones who work in the computer labs) do not understand that laughing, talking loudly, and using cell phones in libraries is completely inconsiderate. Why should they think different when the library staff does nothing about it when asked to intervene?
I hope the new library has an enforced no cell phone policy throughout the building.

Rebecca, I agree! The search in the bookshelves that reveals the hidden treasure-text is serendipitous, an essential part of the research process a library provides. Also, regarding this online ordering procedure, without actually holding a book and examining its contents, one cannot tell if it is helpful to one's studies. Never judge a book by its title, either. Commuting to other libraries is not an option for many students. In short, this is a catastrophe.
