Slow WIFI?

If you receive complaints about slow wifi in the building, please make sure that you send a message to Thoreau Lovell (tlovell@sfsu.edu) and/or Chris Novak (cnovak@sfsu.edu). Unless the Lib IT staff are alerted to issues related to slow wifi, they may not be aware that there is a problem. If you can specify location where there’s a problem, that would help.

There are a few other things you should know about the changes in FOL benefits.

FOL members at all levels of membership can use the 2-hour guest computers, but they still need to setup a Library PIN first. FOL members at any level can no longer use the regular computers or express computers in the Research Commons.

Sustaining and Contributing level members can now checkout netbooks. But they do this from the Book Checkout counter, not the Research Commons. The Book Checkout counter is also where Sustaining and Contributing members sign up for temporary wifi accounts. These accounts are active until the end of the current academic period. For instance, a Sustaining member signing up today would have an active wifi account only through May 27th. The relevant periods are Fall (Sept – Dec.) Spring (Jan – May) and Summer (June – Aug).

Lifetime members are now equivalent to Regular members in terms of benefits unless they pay extra for either Sustaining or Contributing level privileges on a annual basis.

Finally, Contributing level members can use designated workstations in Digital Media Studio.

Friends of the Library, privileges have changed

Privileges for ‘Friends of the Library’ have changed as of today. One big change is that Friends need to use Guest computers. At the Sustaining level ($100) however they have some nice new options: Netbook check-out and WiFi (they should go to the Book Check Out Desk). PIN Number Problems – Reset

For several days now, many students whose PIN numbers were working previously, have reported errors trying to login. Having the students reset their PIN seems to work. The problem has been reported.

ACCT 302 Ratio Assignment

Students are in the library looking for the ratio sources in the reference area per the instructor’s written assignment. However, the current issues of the ratio sources are not in reference, but on two-hour reserve. In consultation with the instructor, they were placed there last April because they were disappearing from the ref stacks. The sources on reserve are: Troy, Leo. Almanac of business and financial ratios. HF 5681 R25 A45; D&B. Industry norms and key business ratios. HF 5681 R25 I52x; Robert Morris Associates. Annual statement studies. HF 5681 B2 R6

Bikes in the Library

Bikes are not allowed in the Library and it’s becoming more of a problem. If you see anyone with a bicycle in the Library please contact Matt Blevin or Jeff O’ Connor. Students may use bike racks on the west side of building or the Bike Barn. Thanks!

Room 280 Now Open for Walk-in Computer Use

Room 280 is now open Monday – Thursday 5pm – 10pm, except when it’s reserved for a class, for walk-in use by current SF State students, faculty and staff. There are 74 windows PCs with the full set of software available in the Research and Study Commons. In order to use a computer, patrons need to sign in with their SF State ID and Library PIN. Both black & white and color printing is also available using the OneCard for payment.

Key Pickup for Room 121 now at Checkout Desk

Anyone requesting access to Room 121 should now be directed to the Checkout Desk. Research Commons staff are no longer opening this room.

San Francisco State Budget Book

There is an assignment going around which asks students to provide salary information for the highest and lowest paid SF State employees, or something like that. Direct students to the third floor “Government Reference Book” area located on the southwest wall. The Budget Books occupy a couple of shelves that are labeled “SFSU Budget.”
