AutoRecovery works…just differently

We’ve had students come in and work on their Word docs  from the library’s computers. And there have been times when their session has ended, accidentally (and not so accidentally) before being able to save their work

Also complaining why our AutoRecovery for Word doesn’t work on our computers. This is how AutoRecovery works on OUR computers (don’t know if this is the same with outside library’s computers):

1) It has to be a completely new document,  starting fresh HERE, in the library, and

2) saved to our Temp drive. Same goes if its a document they were working on elsewhere. Have them download (if emailed to self or from iLearn) and saved to our Temp drive/folder.

This tends to work for AutoRecovery for Word. If this isn’t clear, I totally welcome you to come up and ask me to clarify this for you.

    Suggestion,
If someone is working on updating a file created on a different computer, s/he can start off by selecting “SAVE AS” and giving it a slightly different name with a suffix of version 1.1, then 1.2, etc. Word should treat this as a new document and the autosave should apply towards it. I have rarely tried to recover a Word document, so I have not actually done this myself.
