HIST 300 Postel – Students Requesting Microfilm

October 18, 2010

One section of History 300 (25 students), taught by Charles Postel, is coming to desk asking about requesting microfilm.  The prof. wants the students to get historic newspapers on microfilm, even if they are available online, because he thinks its valuable for them to have the experience of working with microfilm.  I’ve taught workshops for this class/prof., so they do know about online options, but unfortunately the prof. is still convinced that they need to use micro!

I checked with Ed and he thinks it shouldn’t be a problem for students to request microfilm, even if we have the source online (let me know if you hear of any students running into problems with this).

The most useful thing would be to steer the students to the Primary Sources Research Guide, to the tab on Historical Magazines/Newspapers in the Library section. There’s info there on what we have, and includes a link to the microfilm request form.
