No DoIT computer training this year
In trying to help a patron who need some serious Excel training, I noticed that DoIT is not offering their computer/software training this year. From their website: “Due to budget cuts causing limited staffing resources, a reduction in the number of positions, the implemented furlough program (time and pay cut) for SF State, and the e-mail migration project (for faculty and staff) that is currently underway, the Division of Information Technology Training Center regrets that we cannot offer our regular training program for the Fall 2009 and 2010 semesters.”

I noticed this as well when trying to help a patron. I was able to direct her to the computer classes at SFPL http://www.sfpl.org/index.php?pg=1100000001&t=3
However, these are pretty basic and won’t be appropriate substitutes for the more advanced classes formerly offered by DoIT.

Also, we have lots of Safari Electronic Books on all sorts of software programs that students can access online while trying to use something unfamiliar to them. They are usually just as umfamiliar to me so this seems to be the best way to address their needs while not having DOIT how to classes anymore. I think it was Chris Mays who pointed that out a while back and this approach seems to appease the need.
