Night Crew With Their Hands Full

I was just notified by a librarian that during night time a lot of students are sitting at computer stations simply for studying whereas other students who actually are in need of the computers are left there standing to wait for another available computer.

Also there seems to be students who are taking our “Out Of Order” signs and saving computers either for themselves or their friends while off doing other things. People are also sticking pieces of paper into our computers’ ethernet sockets.

Is there anything we can do to stop this?

Maybe we need to limit our access to Annex 1. Our community users have figured out they can get access to Annex 1 by joining FOL for a minimal cost.

Oh brother. We added as many general study tables/seats that we had available in storage a few months ago, recognizing that there was a demand for non-computer study space. During finals, it’s obviously still not enough.

Do we have an up-to-date list of computers not-in-service? Perhaps as part of their sweep to count heads every 2 hours, the person doing that can keep the list and pull off any ‘out of order’ signs that are not on the list.

Why would anyone stick paper into ethernet sockets? Is that like stuffing paper into your ear, a sign of quirky weird behavior?

I was the the librarian that talked with Holden – I don’t have access to the blog to post, so a work around was in order.

If there is paper in the ethernet port, it appears as if the computer is not working. Then you get to come back – take the paper out and voila, you have a working computer. No waiting!

There were just a couple of people sitting at the computer work stations studying. And these were work stations with working computers. I asked them to leave so that the people waiting (and there were a few) could get to a computer.

So that is the end of my Monday Night storey
