Names for First Floor “Commons”

We’re trying to differentiate the ground floor Commons from the 1st floor Commons. The First floor area could be more like the old Research Assistance area in that it we’re thinking of it more as an IRIS managed space. So what to call it?

Meeting Notes

Consider putting media reserve service point in Media distribution
Special Collections will need more space for large format digitization. They will also need a place to setup a camera, lights, etc. for shooting maps, posters, etc. We discussed putting this setup in MMP.
Rethink the layout in workroom to accommodate larger work areas
Think about moving service point toward front door and putting the “help lab” spaces behind the counter.

Users can use My Lists to create groups of desirable materials, place a hold or freeze it!; change contact info; book rooms or materials; sign-up for alerts of preferred searches, and much more. It’s a personalized experience that includes creating reading lists of cool books or looking at their own Patron Ratings or Community Reviews.

OpenRoom: Making Room Reservation Easy for Students and Faculty

Scheduling and booking space is a problem facing many academic and public libraries. Systems staff at the Ball State University Libraries addressed this problem by developing a user friendly room management system, OpenRoom. The new room management application was developed using an open source model with easy installation and management in mind and is now publicly available.

Typical activities in the self-service area in the front of the digitization services area:

Faculty: use computer stations to scan and upload content into iLearn:
Faculty: “help lab” session with staff from the Lib and/or AT (or send them to Fac MMP on second floor?)
Students: upload digital copies of theses into repository
Students: upload academic materials into Portfolio system
Students: “help lab” assistance from Lib and/or AT staff related to digital theses or portfolio system
Other?
- What other digitization equipment could we house here?

Back of House Services (Digitization Center)

Typical duties for Library staff working in the back of house area:

Check for existing online versions of content requested for reserves by faculty
Digitize print content received from faculty that is not available online.
Check for existing online versions of content requested for document delivery
Digitize print content requested for document delivery that is not available online.
When possible, digitize media put on reserve by faculty
Process and upload digital copies of theses into digital repository
Work on special collections digitization projects
Create / support materials for electronic exhibits
Create materials for Library faculty and staff presentations

Services at the Service Counter

Typical duties for staff working at the Digitization Service Point:

Accept documents for digitization and files to upload into eReserves/iLearn system from faculty
Accept hard copy reserves from faculty (for delivery to / pickup by Distribution)
Accept media reserves from faculty (for delivery to / pickup by Media Services)
Assist faculty using digitization equipment in center
Distribute document creation/digitization and accessibility guidelines to faculty, staff and students
Assist students preparing digital theses
Assist students preparing work for ePortfolio
Refer users to other digitization resources in the Lib
(Future) Accept digitization jobs for departments using departmental accounts
