Information for Visitors
While our primary mission is to support the students, faculty and staff at SF State, the J. Paul Leonard Library is also open to members of the general public.
Visitors can read the books, magazines & journals, reference works and government publications that are available on open shelving on the 3rd and 4th floors. Visitors can also use the Library Catalog to request titles that are stored in the Library Retrieval System (LRS). Once requested, these items will be delivered to the Book Checkout & Pickup Counter on the 1st floor under the name you entered in the request form within 15-20 minutes when the Library is open.
Visitors may not checkout books or other materials unless they join the Friends of the Library or SF State Alumni Association. Another way to borrow books from our collection is to contact a library that you are affiliated with, such as your local public library, to see if they can get the book for you via Interlibrary Loan.
Most computer areas in the Library are restricted to SF State students, staff and faculty, as is campus wifi access. Members of the general public may sign up for a Guest account, with which they can use designated computers in the Research Commons on the 1st floor for up to 2 hours per day. Go to the Book Checkout & Pickup Counter on the 1st floor to get a Guest Account.
