Please note: This 'kinescope' recording was originally made on November 24th 1963 by filming the picture from a live video monitor. The picture quality - especially sharpness - is much lower than the rest of our footage produced on 16mm film. As noted by KRON-TV GM Harold P. See in a brief introduction (which was shot on 16mm film): "This process has resulted in some loss of [picture] detail." A KRON-TV special program featuring San Francisco State College's Choral Union, conducted by John Toms, singing Giuseppe Verdi's Reqiuem Mass in the campus Main Auditorium, as a tribute to the memory of President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated two days earlier in Dallas, Texas. Includes a speech by SF State's Dean of Creative Arts Dr. J. Fenton McKenna and extended views of the 85 member orchestra and 150 voice choral union performing Requiem Mass. The live telecast was directed by Herbert Zettl from a temporary control room on campus, with assistance from Darryl Compton as technical director. Broadcasting students helped with the video and audio setups and operated the cameras. It's also worth noting that mezzo-soprano Donna Petersen was an SF State graduate (thanks to Helene Whitson for letting us know).... (more info)

She discusses: what she means by "revolutionary" and "communist"; the misleading perception which equates revolution with violence; the Soledad Brothers; her personal relationships with George Jackson and his family; the concept of U.S. justice and rehabilitation; systemic racism and the use of lobotomy and drugs on violent offenders; California's use of indeterminate prison sentencing; women in prison and Wesley Wells. At one point, when asked to clarify her position on what it means to be a 'communist', she explains that: "I have a very strong love for oppressed people, for my people, I want to see them free ... I want to see all oppressed people throughout the world free. And I realize that the only way that we can do this is by moving towards a revolutionary society." KPIX Eyewitness News report from March 3rd 1973 by Bill Hillman at Tower Records in San Francisco, which is demonstrating music videos of The Beatles and Shanti (referred to as "video rock n roll"). Includes views of the equipment and scenes of people sharing their initial reactions to this new technology (which isn't for sale yet). Hillman interviews a man who works in the video cassette industry and reflects that: "The video cassette industry is still an infant. But there are those who expect it to grow rapidly and become a healthy youngster. In that case, the time may be close at hand when the nation's parents will find themselves watching The Beatles, as well as listening to them." A handwritten note on the demo unit prices the player only at $995 (which would be the approximate equivalent of $5000 in 2011).... (more info)

Ends with an anti-Vietnam protest in downtown San Francisco?s Union Square, where a speaker tells his audience: ?By your own silence you are as guilty as those who you disagree with.? Part I of a KQED news report featuring violent clashes between police and students at SF State College during a demonstration along 19th Avenue. Students antagonize police lines with chants of "kill the pigs!" and brandish large photographs of swine. A battered and bloody Donald McAllister is seen being led away by police. Students erect barricades from furniture and Dr Carlton Goodlett hands out flowers to protesters. An African American student and his German Shepherd dogs are beaten by police and a melee ensues. Part II of a KQED news report featuring violent clashes between police and students at SF State College during a demonstration along 19th Avenue. Arrested students are seen joking around defiantly, as they are processed by riot police and others repeatedly taunt police. One riot policeman moves to attack a capering student but is brought back to his senses by fellow officers and they back away, to roars of approval from their antagonists. KPIX Eyewitness news report from June 10th, 1970 by Belva Davis, featuring an interview with a member of Virtual Murrell's legal team. Murrell's lawyer announces that Murrell, the former Distribution Manager for the Black Panther Party, is going to resist the government's application to grant Murrell immunity in exchange for testifying against the Party, claiming that this action is a violation of Murrell's constitutional, political, and civil rights. The lawyer also states that he believes an offer of immunity will still leave Mr. Murrell vulnerable to state prosecution. Murrell is also interviewed, and states that the he believes the goverment's attempt to convince him to testify against the Party represents "the continued harassment of black leadership locally and nationally to suppress the Black Panther Party, and not only to suppress the Black Panther Party's leadership, but also to suppress the black caucus' leadership here in Oakland because of our effectiveness." When asked during the interview if he is associated with the Black Panther Party, Murrell responds, "No more than that we're all going through the same plight: the liberation of black people." She raises concerns that there may be iniquities in the management of city health coverage plans and points out that: "When a public official is being attacked by a board or a commission, he or she is certainly entitled to inquire in detail how that department operates. And what motivates it's actions ... I have no feud with anyone."
